March 30-April 3

During testing, we won't send home any written homework. We won't have a reading story or spelling test. We will have a spelling list that we work with at school, but the words are ones your child should already know - and we won't have a test on them.
We will, however, still have our weekly passage! DIBELS is just around the corner and we CANNOT slack off on reading our passages!
Don't forget - 90 is the magic number (in words per minute)!
We do ask that your child achieve more than 90 words per minute on the weekly passage because he or she should have lots of practice reading it.
(Just wanted to be sure you understood why the goal on the weekly passages is higher than 90 now.)
We're having a little trouble counting money! If you have a few extra minutes at home during the next week, make sure your child can tell you the value of coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter)! Also, be sure your child can count a handful of coins!
As we continue to prepare for the SATs, we're going to work on this at school, but your help at home would be appreciated!

We're also going to have a unit on money after testing, so help your child get ahead of the game!

Money due for

t-shirts April 3rd.

T.G.I.F.

We were so exhausted this afternoon
from doing this (test practice)
that we spent Fun Friday playing this (Uno).

You're probably wondering what we've been up to...

We all had a wonderful, relaxing spring break and we've hit the ground running with test practice.
We've been preparing for the SATs!! We're looking at a lot of this

in this book. (We've become very familiar with Scoring High!)

We're reading this

We've been analyzing a lot of graphs lately, so we took a poll to determine the favorite ice cream flavor in our class. Vanilla won!
Note: 1 ice cream cone stands for 2 students - that means a 1/2 ice cream cone stands for 1 student (Sometimes those graphs can trick us!)

Sorry I've been such a blog slacker this week! I promise to do better!

Don't forget to round up old...

PHONE BOOKS!!

We're putting old phone books to good use!
The school that recycles the most phone books by April 16th will win a cash prize.

The city of Decatur is also asking everyone to leave their old phone books in recycling bins for pickup on April 1st and April 8th.

Read Across America

Monday was Read Across America in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday. We read If I Ran the Zoo...

Then we wrote about what we would do if we ran the zoo! You'll get to see our writing in the hallway when you come for Parent/Teacher Conference Day.

We also read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss and played a game called Pin the Egg on the Plate.

Look @ what I did this weekend!

As you kiddos know, Mrs. Davis is finally finished with her school!! So, I talked my husband into shopping with me on Saturday. We found this toy @ TJMaxx and came home to put it together. It's a Formula One car made of 455 legos!
Here we are just getting started...
And here we are today with the finished product:

America's Most Wanted AllStars

Mrs. Waldrep's (1st grade teacher @ BC) husband, Chris is in the running for a national award called America's Most Wanted AllStars.
This award is for first responders that have provided outstanding service for their community. Chris started the DEC (Drug Endangered Children) program for Lawrence County. The program is to provide children who are in dangerous situations (where drugs are involved) with additional services such as medical and mental health services, representation in court, as well as new clothes and other necessities throughout the rest of their childhood. He also provides substance abuse education at local church services, schools and community organizations.
What a wonderful thing that Mr. Waldrep has done, right?!?! You can help him win this award by voting once per day! Use the link on the right side of our blog to vote.
